Teen sensation and powerhouse Pop vocalist, songwriter, dancer and all around performer Devon Brooke Champen, aka Devon Brooke is ready to take on the world with her flashing smile, girl next door looks, unbelievable talent and her debut Fortified Records CD, This Is My Time featuring the hit single, “Heartbeat,” and hot cuts “Real,” “Another Way” and “Out of Bounds.”
Born in a small town in upstate New York, the second eldest of five, she now lives in Ansonia, CT with her mother, Registered Nurse, Lakeisha Champen. Sadly, she lost her father at an early age. However, that didn’t slow her down. The child prodigy was drawn to all things musical from the very beginning. She started singing in church at age five. By the time she was nine, Devon was writing songs on a level way beyond her tender years. Her family recognized her gifts and encouraged her talents. As a child, Devon was inspired by her aunt who sings Gospel, as well as an uncle who creates Hip-Hop music and owns a recording studio. She grew up listening to R&B singers such as, Alicia Keys, Diana Ross, Luther Vandross and Aretha Franklin. The rich R&B sounds Devon heard, fused with her Pop and Dance music influences via Rihanna and Ke$ha, joined by her own real life inspired lyrics all come together to create the magic that lives in Devon’s amazing voice and infectious music. It all makes for Pop and Dance music heaven, found on This Is My Time.
Way before she landed her record deal, the Ansonia High School student and star athlete (she plays a mean game of volleyball, basketball and softball) made a name for herself in Connecticut performing at every talent show she could get on. She says, “The first time I performed in front of a real audience I was 13years old in the Jr. American Idol contest and I won the competition!”
Devon obtained her deal with Fortified Records as the result of her performance at school. She says, “I performed at a talent show at school, and a friend of mine, who is also signed to Fortified Records, was in the front row. He was so impressed that after the show he introduced me to everybody at the label… I came down to the studio and I sang for them. And that’s where it all started.”
Her songwriting abilities are only second to her vocal prowess. When asked about the inspiration behind her songs she says, “It’s an outlet for me. I write about anything that crosses my mind, anything that’s bothering me, like things that make me happy, things about my mom or my troubles with my dad. And yes, boy troubles! For instance, the lyrics to my debut single, “Heartbeat” are like, do you think you know me by the style of my hair. I was thinking about people judging me by the way I look or the things I say when I wrote that. I just wanted to let people know they don’t have to listen to what others say about them. That’s kind of what I go through in school. It just bothers me to know how many people listen to others, spread rumors, and talk about them.”
Devon Brooke is set to make hit music for decades to come, but for now, she’s enjoying making you dance and have fun with her debut release, This Is My Time.
